What does period pain feel like?

Some women are perfectly healthy, but can have completely pain-free periods. Or, periods that only bother them a little. For most of us, periods can be uncomfortable - but thankfully, not for too long.

Some of us experience Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS, in the days or weeks before our period. Emotionally, we might feel cranky, and not quite ourselves. Physical symptoms can include feeling ‘bloated’, tender breasts, a swollen stomach, back and lower abdominal pain, headaches, a lack of concentration, mood swings, clumsiness, and even tiredness.

For many of us, cramps are a signal that our blood flow is near. Sometimes cramps can last for just a day, but a small number of us experience cramps for three or more days.

We might feel slightly uncomfortable, but able to carry on with our day-to-day lives. Tough cramps can stop us from enjoying our everyday activities, and can even keep us tucked up in bed, wishing they’d go away as quickly as possible.

Usually, the pain is centred in the lower abdomen, although sometimes it travels up the spine, down the legs, and round to the lower back. It’s not unusual to feel dizzy or nauseous, maybe even to throw up. Or even to have headaches, diarrhea or constipation.

But, the symptoms shouldn’t last more than a few days. If they do, it’s a smart idea to talk to your family doctor, because there’s a lot that they can do about tough cramps and pain.
