Exercise

  • Get her to do some gentle exercise - it's probably the last thing she feels like when she's doubled up with stomach cramps but exercise can help to ease the pain by relaxing the muscles in her womb (uterus) and increasing the blood supply to her pelvis. It may also help to lower the levels of prostaglandins, the hormones thought to be a cause of period pain.

  • Aerobics, running and swimming are all good forms of exercise to help relieve period pain. You could also go for a brisk walk together or she could lie down and cycle with her legs in the air.

  • Get her to stretch out by standing up straight and imagining there's a piece of string running from her heels, up her legs and spine and out through the top of her head. Tell her to pull in her stomach and breathe deeply as she imagines someone pulling slowly on the string so she's stretched up tall.

If you've tried everything under the sun and period pain is still making your daughter's life a misery, it's worth asking your GP for advice.
